3ds MAX Network Rendering, Best use of Your Cores – 678

Network Rendering on Autodesk 3ds MAX, and getting the maximus out of your CPU cores is not always as simple as just installing CPU’s with a lot of cores.
I have been experimenting with this for years, WinXP, Win7, VM’s bare metal,, etc. BTW. Win XP 64bit is the fastest for this.

Setting up Backburner for Network rendering :

Even just 1$ a month, comes out to the same as Binge-watching all of my 500+ Videos every month.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.

I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I’m trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

What do you think?

  1. your measurements are incorrect, because the time of the first frame also contains the time between you starting the renderprocess in the manager and the program finally starts working on the node…

  2. It all really depends on how you configure this in VMware…
A vCore in VMware is 1/4 of a physical core (scheduling wise). I think you really have to dive into VMware and tune it to do the scheduling for a single VM (which is kind of defeating the purpose of VMware of couse).

  3. Wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , very powerfull CPU !!!!!!!!!!!!! ,nice experimenting and thaks for sering with as !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. a cool example of the grunt of a server. with having 2 servers running 16 cores. how many virtual servers give the better performance ? for electricity cost? as i take it you are trying to work out time and money to render a small set of frames then you can estimate the total frames cost and time.

  5. Considering my render farm, with almost 4 core machines and few with 8 – 12 cores ( without hyper Threading ) i don't need virtual machines. Thank You for this video!!! Very interesting.

  6. I cut my teeth on 3D Studio R3 for MS DOS awesome program took me years to figure out. Still need years to figure out the rest of the program, COMPLEX is an understatement for this program. My advice is to read three inch books to understand this program. Cheers

  7. Could you do a video on your powering?
I am looking at having a similar setup by either the summer or the end of this year.
And I need to know about the powering.

You have 2 racks of servers.
What kind of power are you dealing with there?
Your breaker box for the server room, fuses, and Wattages.
(I am in the US so it would be cool if you talked about both the UK, and the US in the video.
OR, if you already have done a video, could you provide a link or the video #.)

  8. I would love another video (or link to someone else's) that dives a little deeper into this subject. Years ago I had created my own "farm" no VMs back then and noticed that network latency amongst other small things actually hurt the render times. Needless to say I'm a little shocked at how splitting up 16 cores into 4×4 setup is faster. I understand why 32 isn't necessarily an improvement, but having it split 4 ways and data being written 4x isn't sinking in. Unless I've missed something and those 4 frames in your test are being broken up (1 per VM) – then that would make sense as each VM only has to deal with a particular chunk. Thanks for the videos, I really enjoy your "down to earth" approach to explaining things!

  9. How much does storage speed get into the count? I was thinking of using a ramdisc for converting videos and rendering blender vse projects. By the way why did you use a calculator when you could use spreadsheet itself?
