Climate change and the need to change behaviour in the West

Research and the Sustainable Development Goals
Thursday 26 April 2018, 11.00-12.30
DIIS ∙ Danish Institute for International Studies
See programme below…

The Paris climate agreement has been heralded as a major step forward in the attempt to mitigate climate changes. While it has stimulated action around the world, business as usual seems to be very widespread not to speak of the much-discussed American withdrawal from the agreement. Yet, time is of upmost importance if we listen to the scientists. Timely reductions of CO2 emissions will not only be easier and cheaper to undertake compared to later ones. They are also necessary to avoid setting irreversible climate changes in motion that have unpredictable consequences. Professor Kevin Anderson is a central academic voice, who has gained widespread attention by pointing to the potential dangers of tech solutions and highlighting the need for substantial behavioural change in the West. He presents very concrete suggestions to the questions of what to do and where to prioritise action.

The seminar is the first part of a whole-day event on Research and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to its important subject, the seminar will highlight how research may contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. A few of the ways research can make a contribution, is by providing solid data for political decision-making, exploring and suggesting new initiatives directing the world towards the SDGs, and criticising widespread practices and policies inhibiting the SDGs.

The second part of the Research and the Sustainable Development Goals event will be in Danish with the caption Forskning og verdensmålene, please follow the link for more information and sign up.

A walk-around lunch of sandwiches will be served in between the two seminars.
